Additional Insight on Degen Paints a Different Picture
Monday, May 26, 2008
It is fair to say that the signing of Philip Degen has left most fans, at best, underwhelmed. Even though only a few have ever seen him play enough to really form an opinion, the over-riding feeling is that he won’t be any good.
Therefore it was refreshing to hear Andy Brassel talk positively about him. Brassel is the European expert on the World Football phone-in on the BBC, as well as a regular writer on Champions magazine, and he had this to say about Degen on last Saturday's show.
25 year old right back who has not played since February because he was out with a thigh injury. He was out of contract at Dortmund so it will be a free transfer for Liverpool. Very, very good coming forward and one of the stars of the Swiss team. They were so keen to get him back that they rushed him into the squad despite note having played in over three months.

I would like to ask Rafa why he believes its difficult cause other clubs spend big (and we don't)
I have researched the spending of both clubs over the last 4 years
This is about the teams that are now and doesn't include any players that have left
MANU = 117m
LFC = 114m
From what i can see, Manu spend there money better ...... LFC buy more cheaper players and the turnaround is greater ..... so Rafa, tell this Liverpool fan of over 40 years, why you keep lying to me? The spending isn't that far apart, the way Rafa talks I would have expect Liverpool to have spend less and Manu to have spent a lot more! I could be very wrong here but are we being played like a fiddle?
And whats the manager of my club doing, by stating to the press that we must not talk about winning the league next season, oh ya dude, you had better tell me we are going to win the league next season, otherwise I'm not sure what your doing here?
action speaks louder then words, time for action rafa
Which doesn't take into account how far behind United we were when Rafa took over or is that just an oversight on your behalf?
While it might be true that we´ve spent as much as the scum, There are some major differences, first of all, the team that Rafa took over, was wastly inferior to the mancs at the time. Moreover, rednosed Rudolph, has 20 or so years of prem experience on Rafa, ( I think it took him seven years to win it after taking over from a similar situatin when he took over.) I want the title as much as the next guy, but you don´t just win this competition.
In Rafa I trust...
It's fair enough to look at the spending of liverpool and man u as being equal over the last four years. Rafa however has had to replace nearly an entire squad and buy in youth for the future, in order for us to be competative now and in years to come. During this time man u have been buying specific world class players to add to a good squad.
I agree that now that a good squad is in place, rafa needs to find the world class players to take liverpool the final step.
My dear friend..You are looking at the net spending made by fergie...and above that he already had a team which had ronaldo, ferdinand, giggs, scholes,van nistel rooy, rooney....so dont try to compare...Nemanja Vidic-7 million, Nani-17 Million, anderson-17 million, hargreaves-16 million, carrick- 18 million, tevez-25 million,Evra-8 million
Rafa had to build a team from scratch.... u think the likes of cisse, biscan, diouf,dudek, traore,murphy,cherou were even league players...he had to get rid of these players for nothing.
I am a bigger liverpool fan that u r
YNWA
reikirebel a fan of over 40 years but without a clue when it comes to football ;-)
reikirebel, You talk such rubbish.
The Mancs have far more money than us and can go and spend 20plus million no problem for a player. We have to sell players to buy mediocre.
When Rafa has been given the money, he has spent it wisely. Xabi, Mascherano and Torres all cost big bucks and are superb. Jury is still out on Babel but he looks a good bet as a striker. The players he has spent less on have been less successful because they're more of a gamble and often overpriced. However, he has struck gold in Skrtel and Agger and some of his bargain basement players have been excellent. Arbeloa never lets us down and Aurelio who was free, is excellent and his injury led to the Benitez buy Riise ruining our season.
You might think you clever with your stats but there is no stubstances to your argument.
Well said net spending was the same, but Rafa had to build a squad from the very begginning and at the same time get rid of player nobody wanted. We are lucky we even got half the money we spent for Cisse!!!!!!
To add insult to injury we cannot afford the same wage tab that Man Utd can afford. Do you know that with Anfield we can only cover 70% of the player wages! Unless we can get a new staudium ( Man Utd make 2 million more than us per game at home games) we will have to continue to buy fringe player.
I have to agree with Hicks on this one, what the hell happend to marketing our club. Liverpool is perhaps to most supported clu in the world and yet we can only boast two sponsors.
So you reikirebel you can't compare one to the other at all..........
be honest to yourself, if you are a good footballer playing in an relatively lower profile club in Europe, which club, MU or LIV, you would like to play for FOUR YEAR AGO?
your answer to this question probably is why Rafa has to buy some cheaper/mediate player and then replace them later (in your terms higher turn over-rate).
And Rafa has seldom sold player cheaply when he has to.
reikirebel, u must a rebellian who tired being a devillian.
Why dont you just back to the light path as you're tired being a devillian?
