Transfer of a Legend

Monday, June 09, 2008

For Reds of a certain generation, those who like me grew up in the eighties and who are too young to really remember Kenny Dalglish as a player, there will always be one true legend: John Charles Bryan Barnes. A legend that was born twenty one years ago when he signed from Watford for £900,000.

I know ppl are aware of him being a class act. but i get the impression he is so underated, esp by non-liverpool fans. for the period between 84 (with watford) and 91 he was probably the best player in the world after Maradona, that sounds ridiculous i know but its very very true.certainly the best player in the English game,of course Gullit, Laudrup etc were top top players in Europe, but barnesy scored tons of goals and he would almost glide past players, great vision, great crossing and set pieces too. ppl talk of gazza, but actually barnes was the most talented Englishman of his generation. the main problem concerning his lack of recognition outside of pool is the lack of European games in late 80's. now if he'd won us two european cups evryone else would class him as one of the best players ever not just us reds. great little video. he was a genius. everton, villa and QPR goals are awesome. enjoyed that. cheers. fuck i love our club, YNWA.
