San Jose Off to Bilbao

In a surprising move, young defender Mikel San Jose ha
s been loaned to Atletico Bilbao for the coming season with the Spanish club holding an option to buy him at the end of the twelve months.
Following the departure of Sami Hyppia, it was expected that San Jose would get his opportunity having impressed both for the reserves and for the Spanish youth sides. However, it would seem that Rafael Benitez has decided otherwise following the impressive pre-season performances by Daniel Ayala and Martin Kelly.

Perhaps San Jose's departure may have less to do with Kelly and Ayala's form than you suggest.
I think Benitez feels he needs 4 senior centre-backs (and will continue to pursue the likes of Distin and Turner).
And the fact that Kelly is staying has less to do with his form than it has to do with the fact that he along with Spearing and even the likes of Irwin and Ecclestone will be used as British players in the Champions League squad.
