A Sense of Perspective

The longer the season progresses, the harder it is to defend Rafael Benitez. Actually, the truth is that an increasing number of fans have given up and are starting to turn to writing lists on who his potential successors could be.

Among these there are the usual suspects - Guus Hiddink, Kenny Dalglish, Jose Mourinho - but a surprisingly number are also putting in the name of Roy Hodgson. Some are doing so in jest but I suspect that others are actually serious about it.

Now, there is no doubting that Hodgson is a good manager but those who are actually thinking of him as potential Liverpool material should try to track what has happened to Alan Curbishely who was on the final shortlist to replace Gerard Houllier.

The lesson here is that doing well at a small club with minimal expectations is one thing, succeeding at Liverpool another.

I am very disillusioned with the football we are playing and thee decisions Rafa is making. Rafa used to be a tactical genius but I'm now starting to question his managing ability. What does it take for Dirk Kuyt to be dropped. Effort does not make up for a lack of basic ability. Lucas and Mascherano are ultra defensive and I have not seen them make a forward pass all season. Despite this defensive mindset, we are continually leaking goals. Confidnce is shot to pieces and Rafa is not able to change a game with clever substitutions like he used to because he has his favourite undroppable players, who are not performing but know their position in the team is secure. Why doesn't he play the in form players. Ngog needs more opportunities - the young players are hungry to show what they can do and they cannot do any worse than Dirk Kuyt at the moment. Torres desperately needs support and the 2 defensive midfield system is not working. Change it now Rafa!

Would we be in this mess if Pako Ayestaran was still at the club.Rafa has a backroom staff all of his choice and probably no one to challenge his desicions.Guillem Balague commented that when he left "Liverpool lost the man who says NO to Rafa Benitez"and also said that you could call Rafa a great coach but not a great manager, the hands-on approach was Ayestaran's and we have heard and seen the stories from players who have fallen foul of Rafa's man management style. At the moment I'm seeing too many strange desicions, strange team selections and a team low on confidence with a manager that appears unable to motivate them.Don't get me started on the negative and cautious game tactics. In all there are far too many comparisons to our current plight and the end of Houlier's reign...dour,aimless football with players out of form not being dropped with no sign of improvement.I don't remember Houlier getting as much support as Rafa does at the moment. Our current financial situation means we cannot get rid of Rafa due to the cost to the club,in stark contrast to Man City who sack Mark Hughes due to unhappy wealthy Arabs seeking footballing riches.Just imagine if David Moores had done his homework and found out the yanks didn't have the money to buy the club or was he more interested in the £500 more per share they offered to beat the DIC offer?

I dont think Rafa should be blaim. Its not his fault. I still believe that he will be the manager for next season. Reds are lacking of striking and midfielder. Why so hard to buy a new striker or midfielder? Torres needs some striker that can play upfront with him and gerrard. Management makes mistake selling good player like Alonso... but now is too late for that. Just focuse for next game...
