Good Game Bad Game [vs Chelsea]

For just over half an hour, Liverpool looked as if they were going to make life for Chelsea uncomfortable. Then came Steven Gerrard's embarassing back pass that lead to Didier Drogba's goal which killed off any fight that there was left in the Liverpool players. By the time that the final whistle was blown, Chelsea had scored once more as they enjoyed what was one of the easiest afternoons of their season. Regardless of the implications that a win here might have had, the fact that victory was gifted so cheaply should shame everyone involved with the team today.
Good Game
There was once the debate over who the best keeper in the Premiership was, whether Pepe Reina or Peter Cech. Such doubts no longer exist as the Spaniard pulled off a couple of magnificent saves in the second half to keep the score respectable for Liverpool. Not only my man of the match but the best player of the season.
Until Gerrard decided to Chelsea a goal, Jamie Carragher and Sotirios Kyrgiakos had been handling Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka with a fair degree of ease. Indeed, the second goal only came when Carragher was out injured, hintng that the stars never alligned for Liverpool here, much as they never did this season. Daniel Agger was also solid at left back and his strength ensured that Chelsea didn't didn't stretch Liverpool.
In midfield, the only player who really tried was Yossi Benayoun who ran himself into the ground and carved Chelsea open on a couple of occasions. Maxi Rodriguez too was playing well before injury curtailed his game.
Bad Game
Visibly tired and frustrated, Javier Mascherano did put in some good tackles but overall his game was way below par. Same goes for Steven Gerrard whose afternoon was marked with that back pass. Lucas Leiva didn't have a bad game but he too seemed too frustrated to create anything of note. Mind, at least his frustration showed that he cared which isn't something that can be levelled at Alberto Aquilani. The Italian had a good shot that grazed the top of the bar but otherwise showed no interest in fighting to help get a result.
Up front, Dirk Kuyt was rumoured to be injured which probably played a part in a performance that was as apathetic as that of the rest of the team.
Substitutions
One of the bright spots of the afternoon was Daniel Ayala who handled himself well against Drogba showing that he is maturing into a fine prospect. David N'Gog came on but barely had a ball played in his direction. Ryan Babel's attitude has improved markedly since January but that doesn't mean that he is good enough for Liverpool. This afternoon he was once again anonymous and his decision making continues to be flawed. Surely one of the players who will be leaving Anfield this summer.
